EU states on Thursday (9 March) snubbed the Polish government by re-electing Donald Tusk as Council chief despite fierce opposition by Polish prime minister Beata Szydlo, whose right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party hates him.
Wiadomosci reported that Poland had "laid bare" the EU's democratic deficit. Wiadomosci, the flagship news show of Poland's public broadcaster, TVP, said that Tusk was re-elected due to German pressure and that Poland had achieved its goal by “laying bare” how the EU really worked.
Viewers were showed an old clip in which Martin Schulz, a German politician who is running for election in autumn, said that the spirit of Europe "may have to be imposed by force".

GENEVA: Two men shot dead two people and seriously injured a third on Thursday at a cafe in Basel, north-west Switzerland, police said as they hunt for the suspects.
"Two men came into Cafe 56" around 8.15 pm local time (1915 GMT) "and fired several rounds of shots," police said in a statement, without providing information on a possible motive.
"Two customers were killed. Another is in a critical condition."
The assailants were on the run following the shooting, according to police, who said they had headed in the direction of the railway station after the attack.

An illegal immigrant, who has been deported five times, caused a collision in Southern California last month that left one woman dead, police said.
Estuardo Alvarado, 45, allegedly slammed into the the back of Sandra Duran’s car on Feb. 19 in North Hills, the LA Daily News reported Monday.
Alvarado was driving a 1999 Dodge Durango on a rain-stricken busy road when he attempted to pass other cars at a high rate of speed when he hit a parked car at a curb, police say. He struck Duran’s Toyota Camry while trying to flee the scene of the initial crash, police said.
