Though Torvalds and his team created the Linux kernel, there would have been no subsequent spread of myriad Linux distributions without the work of Richard Stallman, who had launched the free software movement a decade earlier.
Frustrated with the lack of transparency in many core Unix programming and system utilities, Stallman had decided to write his own -- and to share the source code freely with anyone who wanted it and also was committed to openness. He created a considerable body of core programs, collectively dubbed the "GNU Project," which he launched in 1983.
Without them, a kernel would not have been of much use. Early designers of Linux-based OSes readily incorporated the GNU tools into their projects.

Austrian president makes hideous false analogy, may make all women wear head cloth- One presumes he is referencing the fable of the Danish leader asking all people in Denmark to wear the yellow star so the Nazis would not know who was Jewish and who was not. However this actually did not happen, and what the Austrian president wants is closer to having everyone wear an SS uniform so the public will not know who is a Nazi and who not.

From Newsweek: Three militants loyal to the Islamic State group (ISIS) have been killed by wild boars as they planned to ambush Iraqi tribesmen opposed to the group, according to a local anti-ISIS leader. At least eight ISIS fighters had reportedly taken cover among dense reeds in Iraq’s al-Rashad region, about 55 miles southwest of Kirkuk, in preparation for a surprise attack on local anti-ISIS tribesman when a herd of wild boars attacked the jihadists on Sunday, killing three. The militants likely disturbed the notoriously short-tempered animals, said Sheikh Anwar al-Assi, a chief of the local Ubaid tribe and head of the group of local tribesmen who took up arms after ISIS took control of the nearby town of Hawija.

Needless to say, President Trump knows now what he knew then. The problem was not with our generals, it was in what they were allowed to do.
America has the best military in the world. And that military is led by the best trained and most feared warriors on the planet. Their only problem was their lack of leadership from their Commander in Chief. Thankfully, those days are over.
President Trump returned authority to the Secretary of Defense to determine troop levels in the fight against ISIS. Now James Mattis has the power to protect America.
As the Daily Caller reports:
“It’s about capabilities not numbers,” CENTCOM spokesman Army Col. John Thomas told reporters.

From Daily Mail: A Mexican illegal immigrant who was deported 16 years ago is said to have snuck back into the US where he raped a nine-year-old girl as she was sleeping.
Santiago Martinez-Flores, 48, is accused of breaking in through a window in Clackamas and sexually assaulting the child in a bedroom she shared with her five-year-old sister.
He had been sent to Mexico in 2001 after serving two years in the Oregon Department of Corrections for crimes dating back as far as 1994.

From Fox News: The United Nations warned the Trump administration earlier this year that repealing ObamaCare without providing an adequate replacement would be a violation of multiple international laws, according to a new report.
Though the Trump administration is likely to ignore the U.N. warning, The Washington Post reported the Office of the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights in Geneva sent an “urgent appeal” on Feb 2.

While humans don’t have the teeth or claws of a mammal evolved to kill and eat other animals, that doesn’t mean we aren’t “supposed” to eat meat, though. Our early Homo ancestors invented weapons and cutting tools in lieu of sharp carnivore-like teeth. There’s no explanation other than meat eating for the fossil animal bones riddled with stone tool cut marks at fossil sites. It also explains our simple guts, which look little like those evolved to process large quantities of fibrous plant foods.

ATLANTA, Ga. — It’s something of a tradition with the National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting – some local journalist or activist claims that bringing roughly 80,000 gun owners and Second Amendment advocates to a city for a convention increases the risk of a shooting. This year the cry from an anti-gun activist was, “Scores of angry, anti-government gun addicts will converge in Atlanta this weekend! Secret Service, remain vigilant!” Not only has there never been a shooting at an NRA Annual Meeting, crime in the city usually goes down during that weekend. (If you were a mugger, would you try robbing NRA Convention attendees?)

History is full of strange crimes, crazed criminals, and skilled impostors. Listverse has covered many of these odd historical events and personages, from the lesbian nun scandal, to the woman who posed as the Maid of Norway and was burned alive for her efforts, to the mass murderer who claimed to have sodomized more than 1000 men. But here are ten incredibly bizarre historical crimes that very few people have heard of...
