Thirty years is a long time. So it makes sense for the National Senior Games, which kicked off two weeks of competition in Birmingham on Friday night, to celebrate three decades of “fitness, fun and fellowship” at its 30th anniversary gathering. While people who were born 30 years ago may be considered too old for many sports competitions, they are too young to compete in the 2017 National Senior Games. The multisport competition is held every two years for men and women age 50 and older. During the course of these games, more than 10,500 athletes are competing in 800-plus events. Most of the 19 medal sports are familiar ones for athletes of all ages: archery, basketball, track and field, and triathlon, among others. Some may be more associated with an older population, such as shuffleboard or horseshoes.

Jeff Sessions Kills DOJ Settlement Practice That Funded Community Organizations.... The Trump Justice Department is banning federal attorneys from reaching settlements in criminal and civil cases that direct defendants to give money to third-party organizations, a practice that Republicans criticized during the Obama administration. A June 5 memo from Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the DOJ would no longer reach settlements requiring payouts to “third-party organizations” that were “neither victims nor parties” to the lawsuits. In a statement, Sessions said funds “should go first to the victims and then to the American people ― not to bankroll third-party special interest groups or the political friends” of the party in power. COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS WON'T BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

The amount of solar power added worldwide soared by some 50% last year because of a sun rush in the US and China, new figures show. New solar photovoltaic capacity installed in 2016 reached more than 76 gigawatts, a dramatic increase on the 50GW installed the year before. China and the US led the surge, with both countries almost doubling the amount of solar they added in 2015, according to data compiled by Europe’s solar power trade body. Globally there is now 305GW of solar power capacity, up from around 50GW in 2010 and virtually nothing at the turn of the millennium. UK leads Europe for solar growth despite drop in installations after government cut subsidies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is always at his best, he tells director Oliver Stone in a new documentary called "The Putin Interviews" that will air on Showtime June 12-15. The politician attributes his stamina and stability in part to the fact that he's a man.
As Bloomberg reports, "'I am not a woman, so I don't have bad days,' he tells Stone while giving a tour of the Kremlin's gilded throne room. 'I am not trying to insult anyone. That's just the nature of things. There are certain natural cycles.'" Later in the interview for the documentary, which Bloomberg describes as friendly bordering on fawning, Putin reminds Stone that he is a "Judo master" in peak physical shape.
