HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -
In the days following the mass shooting in San Bernardino, some Muslims say they feel they have to defend their religion against radicals who not represent their beliefs.

Khaula Hadeed, executive director of Birmingham’s chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said many Americans learn about the Islamic faith through only the news. She believes that if more Muslims and non-Muslims would cultivate friendly relationships, an accurate understanding of the faith would follow.

Hadeed said one Hoover woman brought her young children to Hadeed’s Mosque in the days following the attacks in Paris.

“She brought her kids, her young kids, her children – she took them, to tell them these are real Muslims,” said Hadeed. “Don’t see what you see on the news. Don’t see the images that you see on television. I’ll show you who the real Muslims are,” Hadeed said of the mother’s instruction to her children.

"She brought them here,” Hadeed continued, “and I think gestures like these make all the difference.”
