Contraception in the form of any pill is useful, but does not protect against disease. And as we were reminded this week from the Colbert Report, in talking about the politics of contraception: "Chlamydia is not a flower."
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 19 million new STD infections occur each year in the United States - almost half of them among young people 15 - 24 years of age. In addition to youth, women and minorities are also severely affected.
Chlamydia remains the most commonly reported infectious disease in the U.S. CDC estimates that 2.8 million new infections occur each year. Based on estimates from national surveys conducted from 1999-2008, Chlamydia prevalence is 6.8% among sexually active females aged 14-19 years.
