JoeM Don't be ridiculous. If you took a poll in modern times, the sentiment would be reversed for your three historic examples. Modern day radical conservatives point to what other people did a century or more ago to illustrate their morality. If it wasn't so sad, it would be laughable. It embarrasses moderate Republicans.

JoeM I'm sure it is. Maybe not in such impressive numbers. Southern Democrats were a different animal then. Ultra conservative states rights. Who does that describe in today's world? You can still have the beer, though.

DonaldS JoeM No Joe, what you said is not true, but John's post is accurate. To add to his post, the Dim's created the KKK and Hillary saw Byrd as her mentor. The Dim's have hurt the blacks in so many ways acting as if they were trying to help. Lyndon Johnson started the welfare system and now only 25% of the black families have a father in the home. It was 75% before welfare.

JoeM Hundred year old facts, Dan. Not relevant in today's world. Simply ammo for die-hard party members who defend their political party and believe the party is always right. Both parties suck.

AdamR The parties were actually reversed during the first three. The then-republican party was the precursor to today's Democratic Party, but let's not let facts get in the way of some good ole gop propaganda!

DonaldS AdamR There are many Democrats, myself included, that are now Republicans. So, how many Democrats, at the time, voted to free the slaves? Are you getting the picture yet?

AdamR Uh it's not spin it's historically accurate. If you change the meme to liberals and conservatives, it would be liberals on all four. The Republican Party now is conservative and would not follow the pattern shown above. You don't have to like it but that's the truth, get over it.

AdamR DanM correct, but it sure as shit can be misinterpreted and misrepresented by people who want to ignore the reality of what was - whoever created this meme being the prime example.

I'll take the generally established facts. Try as many will, you just cannot change history in order to support your particular point of view. Example: A very strong plurality of conservatives swept Ronald Reagan into the Presidency. Even 200 years from now, they will not be Democrats.

JohnB AdamR You are confused about Conservatives and Democrats. Conservative=Responsible, Democrats=free stuff paid with other people's money.

AdamR DanM I never said they were democrats, merely pointing out the ridiculous idea that the Republican Party from when these events took place doesn't resemble the current Republican Party and their philosophies in the slightest and more resembles the ideals of current day democrats. It's like talking to a brick wall, the point being missed over and over.

The best way to translate this in the current environment is to insert 'progressive' for the people who supported these initiatives and 'conservatives' for those who opposed. Fortunately, the 'progressives' of their time - no matter their party at the time - carried the day.
