Former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, known worldwide as the
“lone survivor,” has become a legend in military storytelling. It would
be easy, then, for him to bask in it. But his reaction to being called a
hero on Thursday during Rick Perry’s presidential campaign announcement says a lot about the type of person he is.
Near the end of Perry’s speech in Addison, Texas, the former Texas
governor began telling stories of different military members. After
mentioning Luttrell and his survival story, a woman from the crowd
screamed, “You’re a hero, Marcus!”
What did Luttrell do? He kept his head low and shook it, “no.”
Just one more reason to love Marcus, as if you needed another one!
True heroes don’t need the approval of others, nor do they crave the spotlight and do their deeds for attention.
They do what’s right, simply because it’s right, and in a time when
people are more self-centered than ever, this kind of humble attitude is
refreshing.
Thank you for your service, Mr. Luttrell!
